Helen Townsell, "A Cry for Help"
In the early 1950s, Helen's grandparents Ollie & Helen Westbrook moved to Reno. After finding jobs and ready to buy their dream home, they were denied the right to purchase their home in South Reno, Northeast Reno, Sun Valley, Panther Valley, etc., because of their skin color. Instead, they were directed to a place called Black Springs where the amenities were shacks, no running water, no sewage, rocky roads, & dirt and sagebrush for a yard. "A Cry for Help" tells of a non-violent tireless persistant journey to have what every other surrounding community had, starting with a basic need for survival, WATER.
All is documented history with documents located at the Nevada Historical Society. The book, "A Cry for Help" is at UNR Special Collections Department, Sundance Book Store, Nevada Historical Society's Book Store, and on Amazon.com
